Thylacosmilus was a prehistoric South American carnivorous marsupial resembling a saber-tooth cat. It had ever-growing canine teeth and a specialized jaw but a weak bite and no front teeth, leading scientists to debate whether it hunted actively or scavenged soft tissues. This species exemplifies convergent evolution, occupying a predator’s ecological niche before its extinction.
