Marty Supreme is an outstanding work of cinema directed by Josh Safdie. I have long respected him as a filmmaker, particularly for his collaborations with his brother, notably Uncut Gems and Good Time. This is the first film I've watched that he has helmed solo, and he truly excelled. Safdie's assured direction and rapid storytelling skills shine brightly in this film. Marty Supreme tells the story of Marty Mauser, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, who aspires to be a table tennis champion. Set in New York in 1952, Marty juggles his job as a shoe salesman while competing in ping-pong tournaments. He travels to London for the British Open, where he encounters various challengers, leading to a succession of intense scenes. The film's vibrant energy makes its two and a half hour duration feel like a breeze. This is my preferred style of filmmaking, where a film is so engaging that it never allows you a moment to catch your breath.
