The last time Marty Walsh sat down with the Scrum, he was wrapping up his first year as mayor. Now, as he approaches the six-year mark, Walsh finds himself in an unusual position: after winning a second term in a landside in 2017, he’s mentioned as a possible candidate for governor and US Senate — but he’s been forced to play defense after scandals at City Hall, and some political observers speculate that he’s just not enjoying his job as much as he used to.

In a wide-ranging interview at City Hall, Walsh spoke with Peter Kadzis and Adam Reilly about (among other things) his political future, Boston City Councilor Michelle Wu’s push to abolish the Boston Planning and Development Agency, and how his own battle with alcoholism informs the way he thinks about opioid addiction.
