Community activism comes from her parent’s involvement. As an adult, she yet resides and serves in her beloved community. Through her organization, Women of Help and Influence, she aids women in gaining courage and confidence to start their journey.
The life of an activist includes formal preparation (LEPCO – a certified city leadership program instructing what the city offers and the difference residents can make)
Activists stay in tune with city and state policies, movement and Mary chose to serve as President of a Chamber that covered a family of 5 cities in the Portsmouth, Va. Area.
When Walmart was to come to her community, her group Midtown Business Association become visible to the company, and Walmart chose Mary’s group to visit the main office. Walmart’s way of showing the group how the company operates, thinks, its vision, and value. Per Walmart’s request, Mary chose to become project manager, with her team, write a grant to spotlight businesses in the community that could use help position themselves for success. Mission accomplished! Mary and her team received the grant monies.
