Mary, Not Right Away (Easter Tuesday)

Listen Later

Easter Tuesday

God does not hurry when he teaches us. God never overwhelms us when he reveals his identity. When Moses of the OT encountered God for the first time, God did not reveal himself in a massive wildfire but in a burning bush, something Moses could approach without too much fear. When Elijah found the presence of God, it was in a gentle breeze, not in a storm or in an earthquake. God did not force his identity upon us. He let us discover him. And he is patient with us.

In the NT, it is the same. Jesus did not teach his true identity in an explosive revelation. Let’s look at the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Through a conversation, the Samaritan woman slowly discovered who Jesus is. She first called Jesus just a Jew; then, a man, then, a prophet, and finally, the Messiah that means Christ. This happens again for the man born blind whom Jesus gave sight and sent to him the pool of Siloam. After he came back from Siloam, he was questioned by the Pharisees. He first called Jesus a man. Then, he acknowledged the righteousness of Jesus. And he testified to the innocence of Jesus. He called Jesus a prophet. But he realized the true identity of Jesus as Christ and the Lord when Jesus taught him. And he worshipped Jesus as his Lord.

This is the same in the resurrection. Jesus did not overwhelm his disciples. He gave them much time to recognize him. He slowly revealed his resurrection. Today’s gospel shows Mary Magdalene did not recognize Jesus right away after the resurrection. It is very strange. How could that happen? She loved Jesus dearly, but she could not tell it was Jesus? But Jesus was patient. And he called her name, Mary. And she finally recognized him and truly believed in his resurrection. On the same day, Jesus appeared to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus. They spent the whole afternoon with Jesus but did not recognize him. But Jesus patiently taught all the Scriptures on the way. Finally, at the breaking of the bread, their eyes were open.

Our Lord is patient with us. He reveals himself according to our capacity for understanding. But here is an important thing. Like Mary Magdalene, we should be looking for him. When our hearts long for him, he comes to us as he did to Mary Magdalene. So, let us be patient. Our Lord will surely teach us his resurrection.
