When Major George Armistead needed a special flag to fly above Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, he called upon one of America’s most respected flag-makers, Mary Pickersgill, to see if she would accept the task of sewing the flag. 

 

Mary considered the flag’s immense size, told Major Armistead she could do it, and then she quickly enlisted the help of a least a dozen seamstresses to assist with the project.  You see, this was not – a “run-of-the-mill” flag – but a truly enormous flag that the Major intended to raise above the fort, but only when the time was right.
