Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. 45 years later, on 1 February 1587, Queen Elizabeth signed the death warrant and Mary Queen of Scots was executed for treason and beheaded on February 8, 1587.
