“Man up.” “Boys don’t cry.” Our culture starts teaching young men how to be tough early, often telling them to downplay their emotions and prioritize strength and dominance over weakness. But boys who burry their vulnerabilities or blunt their feelings can end up angry or depressed and are more likely to act out. Today, we’ll take a look at how to combat hyper-masculinity and encourage healthy emotional expression when raising boys and young men. Our guests are MICHAEL C. REICHERT, psychologist and Executive Director of The Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives, and MICHAEL A. LINDSEY, professor of poverty studies and Executive Director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy at New York University.
