KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When I was in university I used to do case competitions – professional sports for nerds – while other guys were out playing sports I was doing presentations competitively instead. That’s where I learned how to speak. I started helping some of the younger students with their presentations because there were no communications professors there and a few years later I had the idea for the YouTube channel because none of this stuff was available on the internet and that turned into the coaching practice I have today.
  • Momentum is so important because communication as a skill is very vague, unlike something like losing weight. What does being a great communicator even mean? Do you use less filler words? Do you smile more? Because that definition is very vague, we need something very small and specific that we can master over time so that we can see progress. So, I devised the random word exercise where you take a random word and create presentations out of thin air, it only takes one minutes to do and if you do it five times a day for a year you’ll have done it hundreds if not thousands of times and that is an easy trick to get started in communication, it puts you out of your comfort zone and will build your resilience as a speaker up in the shortest possible time.
  • There are three types of people listening to this podcast. The first is listening passively and they don’t remember any of the exercises. The second is a really good note taker but after the podcast is over they don’t implement the things they’ve written down. The third is a very small percentage of people who are not just writing things down but are thinking about what their action step will be, how they will implement this.
  • I don’t think it’s possible to remove the fear from presenting. There’s always a level where all of us are scared, including me. Trying to get rid of the fear of communication is a bad expectation to have because you’ll be haunted by it for the rest of your life. Communication is like a boxing match; on one side of the ring is your fear, on the other side of the ring is the message. The goal is not to remove the fear, it's that when your message and your fear meet in the middle of the ring your message wins the match. It should be so important to you that the fear is lost in the end.

BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s not about writing things down, the best way to speak is to speak. If you want to get better, challenge yourself. If you take that action step you’ll be much better than most people at communication.’
‘Practise your presentation like a puzzle. Start with the edges – the introduction, nothing else, 40-60 times. Do the same thing with the conclusion, make sure it’s perfect and then tackle the middle. If you practise this way, you’ll build momentum in your speech and you’ll be able to hook in an audience a lot more efficiently and effectively.’
‘After a few hours of being bombarded by 500 questions about your subject you’ll become bulletproof. Only a small percentage of questions you won’t have an answer for.’
Unlike sports, which you can practise and none of the parameters change, presentations are always different. Find one topic you can deliver a presentation on over and over again, including your movements, and master it.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Brenden speaks about many topics relating to communication such as presentation skills, storytelling and speech breakdowns explaining what separates the best speakers in the world from everyone else.

ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
