LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS
- Authority, warmth, and energy are the key factors to help you have success given that all other factors are equal.
- People underestimate how their voice (i.e. a vocal weakness) can hurt them—it is your “second face.”
- Having a diagnostic tool to determine your own communication strengths and weaknesses is important.
- Become more authoritative in your speaking with your pitch, pace, and volume.
- Increase your warmth by simply directing your body and eye contact toward the person you are communicating with.
- When it comes to your energetic presence, don’t focus just on having it. Focus on how you’re energizing others.
- Create a groundwork and culture for feedback. Start by inviting feedback from others.
QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION
- What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Being told he wasn’t cut out to be a lawyer.
- Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” A recruiter, a retainer, and an empowerer.
- What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? What are my blind spots, and what can I do better today than yesterday?
- What book would you recommend to leaders? How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
- If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Learn how to communicate.
- As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why not?” so there is no limiting factor to your life.
