Mysteries have changed in 100 years
This book was originally published over a hundred years ago, and reading it demonstrates how much tastes and trends have changed in the last century. Although most of the stories did have a murder, there was little explicit description of the crime. The emphasis was on solving the puzzle. The writing style was very different from modern mysteries, also. Quite interesting to see how much has changed, yet how the crux of a good mystery was and is the solution to a puzzle.
Interesting reading
I enjoyed reading the short stories presented. Plot lines were strong and creative. But I was stunned at the caliber of editing in this publication. The checking of correct punctuation appeared to have been assigned to a third grader. Whoever was responsible for editing did not apply grammar rules to these stories. As a proofreader by profession, it was hard to overlook these errors but, overall, the stories were satisfying.
Short Stories
I enjoyed each novel in this collection. Each story moves along nicely. The plots are different and keep the readers interesting.
Mixed Bag of Older Mysteries
Mixed bag. The stories are definitely from a different time period with different beliefs, and they're sort of slow. Some of them also aren't exactly "mysteries" so much as "strange things that happened to the character".
I think it would have been better if they had rearranged the order of the stories - the first few bored me so much I stopped reading the book for some time, but some of the later ones are quite good.
Connie
This writing style is one false ending after another. Just as we settle in to accept fact or guess the ending is another false ending. This story has left the door open for a sequel. This writing style is not for everyone.
