  • Does DMT Reveal Another Reality? Dr. Andrew Gallimore on Consciousness and DMTx
Most people know DMT as an extraordinarily powerful psychedelic. Dr. Andrew Gallimore asks harder questions about it.

In the first episode of Masters of the Mind, host Alexandre Tomic welcomes Gallimore, a neuroscientist, pharmacologist and author whose work explores the relationship between psychedelics, consciousness and our experience of reality.

Their conversation spans the Amazon, tracing the history of ayahuasca and the remarkable pharmacology behind its effects, DMT’s natural occurrence in the body and the question of entities. Plus, a deep dive into DMTx, a method designed to extend the normally brief DMT experience through controlled infusion.

Watch the complete conversation, then subscribe to Masters of the Mind for weekly mini episodes exploring individual themes from the discussion.

    What You’ll Learn
    • How ayahuasca combines DMT containing plants with compounds that prevent DMT from being broken down in the gut, and why its history reveals the sophistication of Indigenous pharmacological knowledge
    • What researchers know about naturally occurring DMT in the body, and why its possible role in neuroprotection remains an intriguing scientific question
    • Why some DMT experiences involve intelligent entities, and how Gallimore proposes studying their behavior rather than focusing exclusively on their appearance
    • What Gallimore means by a “reality switch” and how his theory connects DMT experiences to the brain's construction of our everyday world
    • How DMTx aims to sustain the DMT state for longer periods, and what that could mean for scientific investigation and psychedelic assisted therapy
    • Why Gallimore is interested in investigating whether independently reported entity encounters might contain matching, verifiable information
    • How research into the body's own DMT regulating mechanisms could influence future approaches to altered states of consciousness

    About Dr. Andrew Gallimore

Dr. Andrew Gallimore is a neuroscientist, pharmacologist and author known for exploring DMT, psychedelic experiences and the nature of consciousness. His work examines how psychedelics alter the brain's construction of reality and what unusual experiences might reveal about human perception.

His books include Alien Information Theory, Reality Switch Technologies and Death by Astonishment.

Gallimore has also worked on the concept of extended state DMT, known as DMTx, and is involved in projects including Noonautics and Eleusis, which explore future possibilities for psychedelic research and experience.

    Episode Highlights:
00:19:14 The Extraordinary Science Behind Ayahuasca
How do you turn a molecule that is normally broken down in the gut into a powerful visionary experience? Gallimore traces the history of ayahuasca and explains how the combination of DMT-containing plants and compounds that inhibit monoamine oxidase makes oral DMT activity possible. The story highlights a sophisticated body of Indigenous knowledge that Western researchers took decades to understand, and raises fascinating questions about how such combinations were discovered.

00:23:05 Does the Human Body Produce DMT?
DMT is usually discussed as a psychedelic drug, but it also occurs naturally in mammals. Gallimore examines what is known about endogenous DMT and the uncertainty surrounding its biological purpose. The discussion moves into proposed links with oxygen deprivation, neuroprotection and near death experiences. These ideas remain under investigation, but they open an intriguing possibility: DMT's scientific significance could extend well beyond its psychedelic effects.

00:37:16 What Happens When a DMT Experience Lasts Longer?
A conventional DMT experience can be remarkably brief. Gallimore explains the thinking behind DMTx, an extended state approach developed through pharmacokinetic modeling that aims to maintain adjustable DMT concentrations. The implications are significant for researchers interested in studying experiences while they unfold. He also discusses why Rick Strassman recognized its potential relevance to psychotherapy, where the ability to adjust the depth of an experience could be especially valuable.

00:52:45 Machine Elves, Mantises and the Mystery of DMT Entities
Why do people report encounters with seemingly intelligent beings during DMT experiences? Gallimore explores accounts of elves, mantis like figures and other presences, alongside reports from different cultural traditions. Rather than treating their appearance as the central mystery, he suggests looking more closely at what these beings appear to do. The conversation makes an important distinction between the striking character of these experiences and the unresolved question of whether anything exists independently of the person experiencing them.

01:18:48 The Reality Switch: Is DMT Commandeering Our Experience?
Gallimore describes the brain as a system that continuously constructs our experience of reality. His “reality switch” theory proposes that DMT may radically change the world model the brain generates. The essence of this idea is captured perfectly in one of Gallimore’s most famous lines: “The DMT world breaks into you.” They explore what it might mean for the brain to construct an unfamiliar reality and whether the apparent intelligence within these experiences requires an explanation beyond ordinary perception.

01:26:31 Can We Actually Test the DMT Entity Hypothesis?
If people claim to encounter independent intelligences, how might anyone investigate that claim? Gallimore proposes moving beyond personal testimony and designing experiments that examine potentially verifiable information. The conversation considers the value of involving specialists such as mathematicians and other trained observers who can describe what they encounter with greater precision. It's an especially compelling shift in the discussion, from debating what people believe they saw to asking what evidence could meaningfully distinguish competing explanations.

02:40:52 Could Future Science Switch on the Body's Own DMT?
Gallimore explores research into the enzymes and inhibitory mechanisms involved in endogenous DMT production. One possibility he discusses is whether researchers might eventually influence the body's own DMT levels by acting on these regulatory systems. It is an early and speculative direction, with major scientific questions still unanswered, but it raises a striking prospect: future altered state research might involve understanding and modifying internal biological processes rather than relying exclusively on externally administered psychedelics.
