Publisher's Summary:
In 1946, while Rosy the Riveter was taking her shop apron off and setting down her wrench for the last time, Millie Uher got into a US Army surplus Jeep and drove up into the hills southwest of Maracaibo, Venezuela. In this biography written by her son, we learn she was much more than a working mother. She was a woman of the world and a rare trendsetter that changed the world without design and perhaps intent. The development and education expert would live 100 years and break ground and gender barriers as an athlete in basketball, tennis, golf, and especially alpine skiing as she trekked the globe. She dared to go where others, including men, dared not go, living her life at full speed and never once touching the brakes. From immigrant's child to global diplomat, from rural schoolchild to urbane single mother, and from first-generation high school graduate to PhD, this is the story of a traditional American girl who became a bona fide adventurer.

She Was A Grand Matron
A loving and detailed narration by her son, Millie comes to life as an extraordinary woman who didnât let norms and conventions dictate what she should do and how she should do it. From stories no doubt told to her son throughout his life, until he was old enough to observe for himself, Millie simply documented how she went from her fatherâs home in upstate New York to a life of dedication to others, living in foreign countries, not focused on her own comfort but on those who had so much less. The more colorful stories of her life are described with candor and no excuses, creating a mystique about Millie that makes you want to know her better. Moving around the world with her three children, she managed to get everyone in place, then tackled yet another challenge, whether in South America, Africa, Italy or back in the U.S., she made it seem all so easy, so worthwhile, so selfless. Richard Marin is a skilled story teller and he captures her hard work ethic, her honesty, her tireless dedication and her zeal for life in this wonderfully told story of his mother, which he shares with the reader, who learns more about her in every page. Inspirational and motivating, Millie was an independent woman who, before her time, blazed trails, lived and loved on her own terms, and captured the hearts of everyone she met. I met her once when she was in her 90âs and was immediately impressed by the sparkle in her eye, her embrace of all whom she met, and the pride with which she looked upon her family and friends gathered around her. I bet she had more stories she never told and that is the intrigue of this amazing woman.
Five Stars
Mater Gladiatrix by Richard Marin is a vibrant and heartfelt tribute to the authors mother, Millie Uher, who lived an extraordinary life full of travel, passion and an unstoppable desire to help other people, especially women, to better themselves and those around them. Mr. Marin takes great care and joy in telling his mothers story which includes her work for the Rockefeller Foundation, The New York State Welfare Department and her childhood years in the rough and tumble rural area surrounding Ithaca NY in the early 1900s.
