    • Not all Matter devices use Thread, and not all Thread devices support Matter. Some older Thread products from brands like Eve and Nanoleaf don't support Matter at all, which is where buying confusion often starts.
      • Thread offers significantly lower latency (50–150 milliseconds) compared to Matter's typical 200–500 milliseconds, making it faster than both Zigbee and Z-Wave for local mesh communication.
        • Your Matter controller—whether it's a HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub, or Amazon Echo 4th gen—handles all automation logic. If that controller loses power, your automations stop working even though devices still respond to manual control.
          • Matter 1.4 doesn't replace your existing Zigbee or Z-Wave devices. Your Philips Hue bulbs still need their bridge; Matter just lets that bridge communicate with multiple ecosystems simultaneously.
            • To run Thread-based Matter devices, you need three things: a Matter controller, a Thread Border Router (often the same device), and devices specifically certified for Matter 1.4—always verify certification before purchasing.
