After His arrest, Christ is getting pulled into a fake night-time show trial. The pattern follows redemptive history. Israel was created in the darkness of the first Passover, and on this night, the whole process is being reversed. Israel is undoing herself on this night, in a great anti-Passover. The religious leaders are turning Passover inside-out: in the first Passover/Exodus event, the morning found Israel delivered from a defeated Gentile power; in this Passover/Exodus event, Israel lets herself be reabsorbed into the pagan nations. "We have no king but Caesar". Israel spends this night renouncing the very Lord who delivered them on the night of Passover. When Yahweh shows up, Israel puts Him on trial. When we are tempted to do the same, let us remember that when we presume to judge the Lord, the judgment falls on us.
