A number of people in the Bible made the statement “I have sinned.” David said it on at least two occasions. So did the prodigal son, “I have sinned,” and so did Judas. Listen to Matthew 27:3-5, “Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, when he saw that He was condemned, repented and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders saying, ‘I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood.’ And they said, ‘What is that to us? See thou to that!’ And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself”.
What a tragedy and yet these words are very revealing. “I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood.” They tell us of course something about the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus was innocent. Here is Judas bearing witness to the sinlessness of the Lord Jesus Christ. Here is Judas who became an outsider who was not actually a believer, though he was a disciple, bearing witness that Jesus should not have been crucified as far as the law is concerned. Judas is telling us that Jesus was innocent. Judas is also telling us something about himself. He’s telling us that he had “betrayed innocent blood.”
You know Judas is a great tragedy. He was the treasurer of the disciple group. He was a thief. He was not a believer. In fact, Jesus said he was a devil. Judas opened his mind and heart to Satan and became the tool of darkness. He came with regret, not true repentance. He wasted his opportunity. He practiced hypocrisy and Judas went out and hanged himself. Whenever you yield yourself to Satan, the result is going to be death. Jesus said, “The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill and to destroy” (John 10:10) and that’s what happened to Judas. Did the religious leaders care? No. “What is that to us? You take care of it.”
The problem was that Judas confessed his sin to the wrong people. He should’ve confessed his sin to God and asked God for mercy. Yes, Jesus Christ is innocent but Judas was guilty and yet Jesus died for lost sinners. He died for you! Have you trusted Him as you own Savior?
