The gift of speech is a marvelous gift. When God made the first man and woman, He gave them the privilege of speaking. Speaking to each other; speaking to God. The tongue is a marvelous thing if it’s used properly in the will of God. There are times when we should speak and there are times when we should be silent. There are times when silence is golden and there are times when silence is yellow. It speaks of cowardice and fear.
The Lord Jesus is standing before Pilate the Roman governor and this is what happens. Matthew chapter 27 beginning at verse 11, “And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, ‘Art thou the King of the Jews?’ And Jesus said unto him, ‘Thou sayest.’ [In other words, ‘Yes, I am.’] And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, ‘Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?’ And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.” Peter tells us that when Jesus was reviled, He reviled not again. Here is the God of the universe being accused falsely by religious leaders and Jesus does not speak.
Now why was Jesus silent before these religious leaders? I think the answer is rather obvious. Their opportunity was gone to hear the voice of God. They had heard the Word of God. John the Baptist had come and preached the Word of God. Before him all of the prophets had preached the Word of God and now for some three years the Lord Jesus Christ had been preaching the Word of God. And what had these leaders done? They had rejected it, refused it, they had opposed it and now they were lying in the presence of the God of the universe.
One of the greatest tragedies in life is the tragedy of a silent heaven. God is not speaking to you. That’s why the book of Hebrews warns us, “Today while you hear His voice, harden not your heart” (Hebrews 3:15, paraphrase). Why did Jesus say nothing to these men or about these men? They had had their opportunity; they had wasted it. Let’s be thankful for an open Bible. Let’s be thankful that God speaks to us today. And when He speaks, let’s be obedient.
