It seems incredible that the crowd in Jerusalem wanted Barabbas to be released and they did not want the Lord Jesus Christ. One little statement in Matthew 27 gives us the reason. Verse 18, “For [Pilate] knew that for envy they had delivered Him.” That’s an interesting statement, isn’t it? The sin of envy helped to crucify the Lord Jesus Christ.
You know this reminds me of Joseph in the Old Testament. I read in the book of Genesis that his brothers envied him and because they envied him they hated him. Joseph is a perfect picture of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rejected and hated by his brethren, sold by them to be a slave, going through suffering and bondage, and then being exalted to the throne of Egypt. Our Lord Jesus Christ was rejected and hated and sold by His brethren, and He too was humiliated and put into bondage and He too came forth in glorious victory and has become King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
You know it’s easy for us to cover up our sins with religious zeal. Here is the crowd saying to Pilate, “Let Him be crucified!” And Pilate says, “Why? What evil has He done?” And they cried out all the more saying, “Let Him be crucified!” Ah, but he knew why they were talking like that, they were envious of the Lord Jesus Christ. Sometimes we cover up our sins with so called religious zeal. How easy it is for us to launch a crusade against something. Or to fight someone and yet deep in our hearts there is the sin of envy.
You see the human heart does not want God. If this election were being held today, the results would be the same. If the world today had to choose between the murderer, Barabbas, and the life-giver, the Lord Jesus, they would choose Barabbas. The human heart has not changed and the human heart will not change until that heart is changed by the grace of God. Every day you and I have to make a choice. Am I going to stand with Barabbas or am I going to stand with Jesus Christ? Am I going to walk in the way of the Lord or walk in the way of the world? Let’s walk with the Lord today and let’s be sure that our hearts love Him.
