It was not enough that they had scourged Jesus and it was not enough that they had tried Him illegally. Now they were going to mock Him. Matthew tells us what they did to our Savior in Matthew 27 beginning at verse 27, “Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had made a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.”
And I would remind you that they were doing this to the very God of the universe who held the breath of their lives in His hands! Well, they mocked Him as King. They would not believe that Jesus is King. They also mocked Him as prophet. They blindfolded Him, and then they would strike Him with the reed and say, “Alright you’re a prophet. You know what’s going on. Tell us who hit you!” And what did Jesus say? Nothing. Oh, He could’ve spoken the word and these men been destroyed! He could’ve called down legions of angels! He didn’t do it. Oh how the grace of God was operating when man was doing his worst.
People today still mock Him as King. Oh they give lip service. Like these men they bow before Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Once or twice a year they might find their way to a house of God. Occasionally they might think of the Lord Jesus. They mock Him as King. They mock Him as Prophet. Oh yes, He taught good things and some of the things He said really came true.
Well, I would remind you that He is King. He’s King of Kings and Lord of Lords and He is the Prophet; and He’s reigning today. He is seated upon the throne of the universe far above all principalities and powers and above every name that is name. And one day everything He said is going to come true. Not one word is going to fail. Don’t mock Him today as King. Bow before Him and let Him have His in your life. Don’t mock Him as Prophet. Listen to His Word. Do what He wants you to do. Let Jesus Christ be your Prophet King.
