Matthew 27:33-34

Listen Later

When our Lord was being crucified, they tried to make it as easy for Him as possible. There was a group of women in Jerusalem called the Daughters of Jerusalem and they use to offer a narcotic to all these people who were being crucified. Well, they did this to the Lord Jesus. We read about it in Matthew 27:33-34, “They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted it, he would not drink.” This is the cup that He refused to drink. Why did He refuse to drink this cup?

Well, to begin with it was an expression of His love. The Lord Jesus was going to die on the cross for the sins of the world. He was going to bear the full measure of suffering for us. Suppose He had drunk this narcotic? Suppose it had deadened His senses and deadened His mind. Would we have those seven beautiful statements from the cross? Would we have the words that He spoke from the tree? Could we actually say He willingly offered His life? No it was an act of love when He said, “I will not drink that narcotic.” He was willing to bear the full measure of suffering when He was sacrificed for me.

I don’t know about you, but when I have to have surgery or dental work, I’m glad for all the help I can get that will remove the suffering! My Jesus bore it all for us. It’s also an act of faith. He was going to trust God to sustain Him. The book of Hebrews says that He offered Himself through the eternal spirit (Hebrews 9:14). He was trusting God to see Him through. Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross. It was an act of obedience. When the Old Testament priest was functioning in the temple or the tabernacle, he was not allowed to drink wine. And our Lord Jesus refused that drink. He was going to be God’s sacrifice. He was fulfilling the Old Testament Scriptures! Psalm 69:21. He wanted to be obedient to the Word of God.

Finally, He had told His disciples that He would not again drink of the fruit of the vine until He drank it with them in the kingdom. He was being faithful to His own Word. How we ought to give thanks that the Lord Jesus was willing to bear all of our suffering and all of our sins for us.
