Matthew 27:37

Listen Later

About the only decisive thing that Pilate did was to write the accusation against the Lord Jesus; the accusation that was put above His name on the cross. Matthew 27:37 reads, “And they set up over His head His accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Now when you put all of the Gospel records together, you discover that Pilate’s accusation read like this “This is Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews.” What does it tell us about this Man on the cross?

Well, first of all He is the Savior. This is Jesus. “Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21, KJV). The name Jesus is Joshua, Jehoshua, Jehovah Saves. This is His salvation name. Salvation from what? From sin, from death, from hell. Because He died on the cross He is able to say to you, “I have come to seek and to save that which is lost.” Jesus, He is the Savior. Jesus of Nazareth. He’s the Son of Man. He was identified with one of the most humiliating places in the area. Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? was the question asked. He’s the Son of man who knew how to be humble, how to bear shame, even the death of the cross.

Ah, but He’s the sovereign. He is the King of the Jews. They would not have Him. They said, “We have no king but Caesar. We will not have this man to reign over us.” It’s interesting to note that that accusation really became a Gospel tract because one of the thieves turned and saw that accusation. This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. His thinking probably went something like this: Jesus, that means Savior! He can save me. Nazareth; why He would identify with a person like me? He is humble and submissive. King of the Jews. He has a kingdom! And so this thief turned to the Lord Jesus and said, “Remember me when you come into your Kingdom,” and Jesus promised Him that that very day he’d be in heaven. It’s wonderful to know that even though Pilate with all of his vacillation and unbelief Pilate wrote this little sign and God used that sign to bring a thief to salvation.
