Matthew 27:6-10

Listen Later

Whenever someone dies we often ask the question, what did he leave behind? Of course the answer is he left everything behind but by that question we mean was his life worth living? Did he or she leave something behind; a godly family? Perhaps a pastor who leaves behind churches that he built up? Some people have left behind books or beautiful music, paintings. They’ve left behind a great example.

What did Judas leave behind? A cemetery for strangers, Matthew 27:6-10, “And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, ‘It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.’ And they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called ‘The Field of Blood’ unto this day.” (vv. 6-8). You know Judas left behind a cemetery. Now granted, it was helpful. The strangers who died in Jerusalem, people who were visiting from other parts of the world could be buried there and nobody would worry about it. But imagine Judas committed suicide and he left behind a cemetery.

Our Lord Jesus willingly gave His life for us and He left behind an empty tomb as testimony of His victorious resurrection. Judas left behind a cemetery, a place of death. Jesus left behind an empty tomb, a place of life! Judas left behind a cemetery for people too poor to be buried anywhere else. Our Lord Jesus entered into His glory and left behind riches of grace and riches of glory. Judas ended a failure. Yes, I know, the money that he threw back into the temple was used to help people. I know that, but our Lord Jesus Christ brought victory. In the empty tomb we have Jesus the Victor.

Well, what are you going to leave behind today? You say, “What can I leave behind?” The example of a godly life; you have no idea what it means to the lives of others when God’s people walk in the ways of the Lord. We can leave behind words of thanksgiving and praise. We can leave behind words of encouragement. What are you going to leave behind? What’s going to be the testimony to your life? I trust it won’t be something that speaks of failure and poverty and death.
