Matthew 28:11-15

Listen Later

If the enemy cannot stop something from happening, he will simply start telling a lie about it. That’s what happened with the message of the resurrection. You see the great message of the Gospel is not just that Christ died and that Christ was buried. That has happened to other people, but the great message of the Gospel is that Christ arose from the dead and He is a living Savior today.

Now the enemy didn’t want that message to get out. And so in Matthew chapter 28:11-15 we read that He called a committee meeting and they assembled together and they said, “Now you soldiers tell this story. His disciples came by night and stole him away while we slept.” Ah, but Roman soldiers are not supposed to go to sleep! They’re supposed to be alert. Well, “If this comes to the governor’s ears, we’ll persuade him, we’ll take care of you!” And so they bribed the soldiers, they paid them money and that lie goes on today. Jesus Christ they said did not really come out of the tomb. His disciples stole His body. How they did that of course nobody can explain. Of course nobody has to explain. It never happened.

Our Lord is Victor. God’s Son came forth from the tomb alive having conquered sin and death and hell. Christ is Victor. Now the enemy doesn’t want us to believe that. The enemy wants us to live as though Jesus is still dead and in the tomb. Well, we have a living Savior, a victorious Savior. It means that the Word of God is true. He arose from the dead just as He said. We can trust the Word of God. It means that salvation is available and freedom and deliverance from the bondage from sin can be offered to the whole world. It means joy. It means that we have a joyful relationship with our Lord.

Ah, but the Church does not live as though these things are true! Are we living victoriously? Are we living believing the Word of God? Are we living making salvation available to a whole world? Are we living a life of joy? Jesus is alive! Can people look at us and know that Jesus is alive? The message of the resurrection is not only one of rejoicing, it’s one of rebuke. Are we really living as though Jesus Christ is alive, the conqueror, the Savior of the world?
