Matthew Begbie Statue To Be Removed
The City of New Westminster has voted to remove a statue of ‘Hanging Judge’ Matthew Begbie from the grounds of its provincial courthouse. Begbie was BC’s first chief justice and was responsible for sentencing six First Nations chiefs to death by hanging during the Tsihqot’in war. Two councilors brought forward the motion to remove the statue, arguing it is inappropriate to celebrate a man who played a critical role in the subjugation of First Nations people.
