This episode of Artinorbit features photographer Matthew Conway in open conversation with our host Sofi Ortegano (a young artist and musical theater student).
Throughout his life, Matthew has sought to embody the spirit of a Renaissance man, excelling in various domains such as culinary arts, violin playing, history as a graduate student, and passionate cycling. By instigating incremental changes in his daily life, he not only honed his photography skills but also evolved into a better version of himself. Having been a former student athlete in high school as a wrestler and later channeling that same energy into cycling, he achieved a significant milestone by completing his first century ride—a 100-mile bike journey dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer research, in memory of his Aunt Kay who succumbed to breast cancer during his childhood.
Driven by a deep yearning to pursue work fueled by passion, Matthew endeavors to capture subjects at their finest through his photography. A recent visit to the African Art Museum in Washington, DC served as a catalyst for his inspiration. Witnessing awe-inspiring portraits of Nigerian actors and actresses, he felt compelled to give back to his community in a similar vein—by showcasing images that exude the rare essence of black men and women, celebrating the beauty of the African diaspora through his lens.
