Matthew 14:22-33 is the text for this sermon entitled, "Jesus Walks on Water."
We who follow Jesus have limitations--such as, we cannot walk on the water! In this passage, Matthew uses simple, straightforward storytelling to relay the amazing events after He fed the 5000. This incident addresses the presence of fear in a disciple’s life and provides an example of what “little faith” looks like. Jesus still can use little faith ones!
Jesus begins in solitary prayer after dismissing the crowds and retreating alone to the mountainside. He had sent the apostles on ahead by boat, crossing the Sea of Galilee (Lake Gennesaret). As is common on this lake even today, strong winds came up and the waves were beating the boat. They were a considerable distance from the land. Shortly before dawn (the 4th watch of the night), Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake!
Curtis explores the disciples' response, Jesus' challenge (take courage), and Peter's bold request and subsequent fear. Jesus reaction and teaching bring this incident to a close with stirring words that still hold great meaning for us today. How can we face the storms of today without succumbing to anxiety and fear? Do we turn to Jesus when the waters and waves of life buffet us?
