This is a Service of Darkness, adapted from the ancient Tenebrae Service of the early church. In fact, the word ‘Tenebrae’ means “shadows”. Though we can’t be physically together tonight, we can come together in spirit to hear the familiar scriptures and listen to the old hymns and allow ourselves to be transported back to that night where Jesus met with His disciples in that Upper Room to observe the Passover feast and to share what would be their final meal together. Were we together in the sanctuary we would enter in silence and as the story of that night unfolds the lights would grow more and more dim until we would be left in total darkness; departing in silence. As best you can this evening, remove all household distractions and allow yourself to be transported back to that meal in Jerusalem; back to that lonely garden; back to Christ’s journey to the cross.
