Ephesians 4:11-13
What is church all about? Why do God’s people get together? Well, we sing songs, we pray, we read the Word of God, we hear the Word of God taught and preached, we enjoy good music. What is church really all about? Well, he tells us in Ephesians 4:11-13, “And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: ” Isn’t that interesting? He tells us that church has to do with equipping. God has given gifted people to the church who can share the Word of God. “The perfecting of the saints.” I like that word perfecting. It’s a word that means to “equip.”
It was used to equip an army or to furnish a ship for a voyage. It was also a medical term that means to set a broken bone. Why do we go to church? For equipping. The servant of God takes the Word of God and he equips the people of God. For what? Well that leads us to our second reason for church, and that was enlisting. “For the perfecting of the saints,” that’s equipping. “For the work of the ministry.” Oh, who does the work of the ministry? The saints. I thought we called a preacher or an assistant preacher to do the work of the ministry! No. No, they equip God’s people, and then God’s equipped people are enlisted to do the work of the ministry. D. L. Moody used to say, “I would rather put ten men to work than to do the work of ten men.” And this is wise and it’s biblical.
Are you doing the work that God’s called you to do? That’s why we go to church. Church is a place of equipping and enlisting and edifying. “For the edifying of the body of Christ.” Edify, means to “build up.” So as God’s servants equip us and enlist us, we in turn do the work God’s called us to do and something wonderful happens. The body begins to grow! It grows spiritually, it grows in strength, it grows in number. That is what church is all about. It’s a place of equipping and enlisting and edifying.
