Pentecost celebrates the Holy Spirit empowering the first disciples with various spiritual gifts, leading to the formation of the church. God intended these spiritual gifts for the unity and ministry of the church, but arguments arose over which gifts--and the people who had them--were superior to others. This led to factions and infighting, the opposite of God's intention. Paul declares all gifts of equal value because they all proceed from the same Spirit, and calls for the Corinthians to unify for effective witness and ministry.
