In Russia
Vladimir Putin used a scaled-back Victory Day parade in Red Square to insist Russia would always prevail, while the Kremlin kept security tight over fears of a Ukrainian drone strike. For the first time since 2008, no tanks or other heavy weapons rolled through the square, only marching troops and a flypast. The war is still front and center, even without the hardware.

In public health and travel
Countries across Europe are arranging repatriation flights for passengers stranded by a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship off Tenerife. Officials say there have been eight cases, including three deaths, with several governments sending planes for their nationals and the EU adding flights for other European passengers.
