Episode One – Show Notes
From the railway towns and dusty hotel bars of early Central Queensland emerged the remarkable beginnings of May Bradford’s life story. In this opening episode, we travel back to the pioneering years of May’s maternal grandparents, Herman and Mary de Zoet, whose lives became deeply entwined with the growth of Queensland’s inland railways and remote hotel trade. From Westwood to Copperfield, Bogantungan, Withersfield and Emerald, their story reflects the resilience and movement that shaped early regional Australia.
We also meet May’s father, Charlie Bradford, whose life with the Fitzgerald Brother’s Circus brought another world of travel, performance and uncertainty.
When Charlie married Emily de Zoet, the couple embarked on a life lived largely on the road — a journey that would ultimately lead to the birth of May Gertrude Bradford.
This episode introduces the people, places and restless spirit that shaped May’s extraordinary beginnings.
From the publisher's feed
Born in 1897, May Bradford grew up in Rubyvale, on the Gemfields of central western
Queensland, and went on to live a life of remarkable variety and adventure. From performing
as an…
accomplished horsewoman, pilot and ground engineer, May continually stepped beyond the
boundaries of what was expected of women in the early twentieth century. Her journey took
her from the travelling entertainment circuit to the world of aviation, where she carved out a
place for herself in a rapidly changing and predominantly male environment.
May Bradford: Queensland Aviatrix uncovers the story of a woman whose achievements
have largely faded from public memory. Drawing on historical newspapers, archival records
and other historical sources, this podcast pieces together May’s life, exploring the
opportunities she seized, the challenges she faced and the world in which she lived. More
than the story of a pioneering aviatrix, it is an exploration of female agency, resilience and the
many ways women have shaped their own lives. Join historian Jennifer Perry as she brings
May Bradford out of the shadows and restores her place in Queensland’s history.
