May Day: Snowshoe Hare Paused to Pose: Special Visit?
Snowshoe Hares Lepus americanus go through dramatic population swings, and for the last couple of years I haven't seen them much. This is less apparent in the warmer seasons when they are often nearly invisible (except when the one decides to hang out in the yard, which happens sometimes!) In the winter though, when they are abundant, their tracks are everywhere in the snow!
I only saw tracks a few times this winter, compared to some years, so I was a little surprised to see this one a few days ago. I heard a little noise in the willows then saw someone dash out. I moved to the edge of the thicket to see if there was anything to see, and saw this little person stopped in an open area just before an area of denser woods. They seemed to wait patiently for me to take a few pictures and video, listening to me talking, then moved off out of sight.
Perhaps Great Mother gave me this visit for May Day (around the cross-Quarter Day between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice)- Hares representing fertility, cycles of Life and rebirth, the abundant season ahead.
