Mayon Volcano Crater Emits Lava Fountains Amid Ongoing Eruption

Listen Later

Philippines – Timelapse footage recorded at 5:49 PM shows lava fountaining at the crater of Mayon Volcano. The videos were captured by the Mayon Volcano Observatory Ligñon Hill (VMLH) IP camera and RasPi camera.

Infrasound signals from the activity were detected at the Camp One Observation Station (VMCO, 743m asl) and transformed into audible sound using Sonify software by Liam Toney from the USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center.

The volcano continues its effusive eruption, producing incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents—locally called “uson”—and rockfalls from the crater area.

Authorities maintain Alert Level 3 at Mayon and warn the public that entry into the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly forbidden due to ongoing volcanic hazards.
