Jay tells this one from the Zoo meet and greet.
He had been working Sports Animal radio stuff all day and was wearing a Masters hat from Craig Humphreys.
Craig goes to Augusta every year, broadcasts live, and brings back official Masters hats for the station.
They call it Masters Christmas Day.
Later, Jay is backstage wearing the hat, and the guys in Slayer lock in on it.
They wanted to know if he had actually been to the Masters and how he got the hat.
That caught him off guard.
You expect Slayer to talk metal.
Instead, they wanted to talk Augusta.
That is backstage life.

July 27, 2026 Mushroomhead & Avenged Sevenfold
Mushroomhead, Avenged Sevenfold, and The Agony Scene played the Diamond Ballroom. November 29, 2003.
452 people showed up.
Tickets were $19.
And Avenged Sevenfold?
They were only $100 as an add-on.
At the time, nobody knew what that band would become. They were just routing through, added to the bill, and playing in front of a few hundred people.
The Agony Scene was also on the show, coming out of Tulsa and signed to Roadrunner Records. It was their first time playing Oklahoma City.
Lowlife POS played too, tying the night into that whole Oklahoma heavy music scene.
Looking back, it is wild to think Avenged Sevenfold was once a $100 add-on at the Diamond.

There Were A Couple Of Times...
Some shows had bigger reputations than actual problems.
Marilyn Manson, ICP, and the Juggalos all came with a lot of hype, but most of the time the crowd was not the issue people expected.
When ICP came through, even the police knew the deal.
Let the Juggalos do their thing, keep an eye on it, and do not go looking for trouble.
That same idea showed up at the Gathering of the Juggalos at Lost Lakes.
Police thought about rolling in deep, then saw how dark it was down in those woods and had second thoughts.
Meanwhile, the Juggalos were carrying a 70-inch TV, a couch, and a generator into the woods so they could keep partying until 4:00 in the morning.
That pretty much says it all.

KISS at the Civic Center with Mountain Smoke. March 4, 1976.
This was the first time Max ever saw KISS, and it was also the first time he camped out for tickets.
He ended up third row.
Mountain Smoke was on the bill, which included Vince Gill before he became a country music legend. That night, Vince got booed by a KISS crowd that was not there for bluegrass.
Max and his friend Ronnie Thomas even went looking for the band after the show.
Ronnie took his mother’s Cadillac, and they found KISS at the hotel near Meridian and I-40. They did not see them without makeup, but they did see the backs of them getting out of the limo.
For two teenage KISS fans, that was enough.
Then they got their ass beat when they got home.

Dokken Concert With All Original Members
July 29th at The Brink in Tulsa.
Dokken played the Dysfunctional Tour with the original lineup: Don Dokken, George Lynch, Jeff Pilson, and Mick Brown.
The Brink was a Brookside club better known as a dance club and cover-band room, but that night it had original Dokken on stage.
KMOD presented the show, and tickets were only $13 in advance or $15 at the door.
There is still one mystery left.
Who opened the show?
The ticket does not say, but it was probably a local band. So if anybody from Tulsa was at that Brink show, this is the question.

July 24, 2026 The Cops Like Tech N9ne’s Areola Song
Tech N9ne has played the Diamond Ballroom so many times, he might be one of the most frequent artists to ever hit that room.
Headlining, opening, coming back again and again, Tech built a serious history there.
But one part of his show started getting extra attention.
Some local police officers heard about the “Areola” song, and when Tech came to town, a few of them would show up just to watch it.
Of course, they were there checking the parking lot and making sure everything stayed under control.
But everybody knew they were waiting for that song.
That was one of those funny Diamond Ballroom moments.
Security outside.
Cops checking the crowd.
And a few music fans in uniform watching Tech N9ne do his thing.

Jack White, Loretta Lynn, & Wanda Jackson
Some shows become legendary before anyone realizes it.
The White Stripes at the Bricktown Event Center was one of those nights.
They had played the Green Door before that, and somehow half of Oklahoma City claims they were inside that tiny room. But the Bricktown Event Center show was the one that really put a stamp on that year.
Max had seen The White Stripes and had a signed poster, but Jack White really clicked for him later through the solo records and live shows.
Then came the country connections.
Jack working with Loretta Lynn on “Portland Oregon” was the one that pulled Max in. He even got to talk with Loretta about it, and she said Jack was a nice fellow.
Jack also worked with Oklahoma legend Wanda Jackson, which made the story hit even closer to home.
The White Stripes at Bricktown Event Center was not just another booking.
It became one of those special shows people still remember.

Mudvayne The KATT’s “First Annual” Monster Ball
Mudvayne headlined The KATT’s “First Annual” Monster Ball with V Shape Mind and Finger Tight on October 29, 2003 at the Bricktown Event Center.
And yes, the show was sold out.
But the real conversation turned into one of the great promoter rules of all time.
Do not call your event the “first annual.”
It has not become annual yet.
You have to make it to year two before you can say that.
Call it the inaugural event. Call it the launch party. Call it anything else. But the second you print “first annual” on the flyer, you are tempting fate.
And in this case?
There was only one Monster Ball.
The first annual was also the last annual.
Still, you cannot take away from the show itself. Mudvayne at Bricktown Event Center in 2003 was a big deal. Heavy crowd. Big room. Sold-out night. The kind of booking that showed how strong that building was during that run.
Big stage.
Big sound.
Big lights.
Sold-out metal show.
Just maybe don’t call it annual until it happens twice.

July 20, 2026 Saved Gary Allan’s A**, No Smoking On Tribal Land
Gary Allan has been one of those artists Max has worked with year after year since 2004.
Sometimes more than once a year.
And there is a reason for that.
Gary Allan is an incredible performer. You know what you are getting when he walks on stage. Ninety minutes to two hours of hits, a strong crowd, and a show that delivers every time.
Back in 2007, Gary was hot.
By 2024, he had moved into that classic country lane. The kind of artist people keep coming back to because the songs still hold up.
But this story is about Durant.
Max says he saved Gary Allan’s ass one time on tribal land.
The crew was outside smoking, and this was long before anything was legal. On tribal land, that is a whole different situation. Cameras everywhere. Different rules. Different law. You do not play around with that.
Gary had to jump back into the bus and shut the door fast.
That was the lesson.
When you are on tribal land, you are not just dealing with venue rules.
You are dealing with their law.
And in the concert business, knowing where you are and what rules apply can save the whole night.

July 20, 2026 Summer Concerts with RATT, Better Than Ezra, Matchbox 20, Suicidal Tendencies & More
The summer of 1997 had a little bit of everything.
May 21st, Better Than Ezra played the Diamond Ballroom with The Boo Radleys. At that time, Better Than Ezra was riding high, and The Boo Radleys were a solid name on the bill too.
Then June rolled in with a strange mix of shows.
John Tesh at the Civic Center.
Reel Big Fish at Bricktown Live.
RATT at In Cahoots.
Then came June 22nd.
Matchbox 20 at The Boar’s Head.
Five dollars.
That is the kind of ticket price that sounds unreal now. A 95X show, Matchbox 20 coming through before they became a much bigger name, and a cool pass designed like an actual matchbox.
That is the fun part about looking back at these old calendars. Some shows were already big at the time. Some were club dates before the band exploded. Some were just wild bookings that only make sense when you remember how different the scene was back then.
Better Than Ezra at the Diamond.
RATT at In Cahoots.
Matchbox 20 at The Boar’s Head for five bucks.
That was summer concert season in Oklahoma.
Different rooms. Different crowds. Same nonstop calendar.
