“Temptation in the Wilderness”
Pastor Joey Anjiki
1. We are tempted
* Matthew 4:1 (See above)
* After Jesus was baptized, he went to the wilderness and was tempted by the devil.
2. Types of temptation
* Why did the devil tempt Jesus?
The three temptations were all to try to get Jesus to choose a path forward other than going to the cross
* The three temptations that Jesus faced are symbolic of the things that tempt us today
1) Temptation to “turn stones into bread” = Temptations regarding money and material objects
2) Temptation to “throw yourself down” = Temptation to seek praise or fame from others
3) Temptation to “bow down and worship me” = Temptation to worship anything other than God
* 2 Corinthians 11:14 “…for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” (See above)
3. How to avoid temptation
* Jesus avoided all of Satan’s temptations in today’s passage by the Word of God.
1) Temptation to “turn stones into bread” = Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 to avoid temptation.
2) Temptation to “throw yourself down” = The devil quoted Psalm 91:12 (out of context), and Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:16 to avoid temptation.
3) Temptation to “bow down and worship me” = Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:13 to avoid temptation.
* The key to avoiding temptation for us is also here.
Ephesians 6:17 “…sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
* The testimony of pastor Mike MacIntosh (Horizon Christian Fellowship, San Deigo, CA, USA)
Thoughts to share at mini church:
1. Why did the devil tempt Jesus?
2. What application do the three temptations have for us?
3. What is the key to avoiding temptation?
