“The First Half of the Beatitudes”

1. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
* What it is that causes people to become Christian
* The problem of death
2. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
* The self-centered nature of people
* Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (NIV)
3. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”
* People who live not by the world’s standards or their own standards, but by God’s standards
4. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
* Hebrews 5:12 “In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!” (NIV)
* Philippians 3:12 “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (NIV)
* A white youth who participated in the civil rights movement

1. Reflect on the four teachings.
(1) What caused you to become a Christian?
(2) What kind of circumstances was it when you were shown your sin?
(3) What kind of people are those who live by God’s standards?
(4) What is necessary each day to be transformed into the image of Jesus?
