“What Righteousness Exceeds
That of the Pharisees?”

1. The righteousness of the pharisees (Salvation by works)
* What is a pharisee? The name of the mainstream religious group in Israel in those days
Pharisee = “separated person”
They added original teachings outside that of the Mosaic Law: The Oral Law “The Mishnah”
* Salvation by works was the initial religious perspective of humans
* Why is salvation by works accepted by many people?
* What is the pitfall of salvation by works?
2. The righteousness that exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisees provided by Jesus (Salvation by faith)
* Jesus intentionally broke the oral law to cause people to come back to the essence of the law
* Jesus& evaluation of the Mosaic Law (Matthew 5:17-18) (See above)
* The purpose of Jesus coming: To fulfill the Mosaic Law
* The meaning of completely obeying the law and its relationship with the redemption of the cross
