“Jesus’ Interpretation of the Law
(First Half)”

* “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago…” = Oral Law
* “But I tell you that…” = Jesus’ interpretation of the law
* God looks at not only the outward appearance, but also internal motives = An effort to show the limitation of salvation by works
* The meaning of Matthew 5:48 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (NIV)
* Strive to walk inline with God’s heart, even in your motives
* This first becomes possible when receiving the Holy Spirit after accepting the salvation of the cross

* Deuteronomy 24:1 “If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house.” (NIV)
* The Pharisees widely interpreted the word “displeasing” to benefit men.
* The origin of marriage that Jesus taught (Cited from Genesis)
Mark 10:7-9 “‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” (NIV)
