“Jesus’ Interpretation of the Law
(Second Half)”
Pastor Joey Anjiki
* Jesus pointed out the mistakes of the Pharisee’s oral law, showed that not only the outward appearance, but God also looks at the motives of one’s heart, teaching that there was a limitation of salvation by works.
* When we receive the salvation of the cross and are given the helper, the Holy Spirit, we can have hope that we will be changed into people whose motives too will align with God’s will
1. Oaths (Matthew 5:33-37)
* Leviticus 19:12 “Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.” (NIV)
(If you absolutely have to make an oath, you must be sure to do what you promised)
* The Pharisees used a devious method to create a way that allowed for not fulfilling oaths
(The method of swearing by heaven, by the earth, by Jerusalem, or by your head)
* The life of fulfilling oaths before God
2. Revenge (Matthew 5:38-42)
* Matthew 5:38 (See above)
- Moses’ “law of retaliation” was essentially a teaching to stop endless revenge
- At that time, the Parisians used this teaching as a way of personal revenge
* Matthew 5:39 (See above)
(The act of offering more than one is asked to do without taking the method of revenge)
* “Civil Resistance” by Erica Chenoweth
3. Neighborly love (Matthew 5:43-44)
* Matthew 5:43-44 (See above)
* Corrie Ten Boom
Thoughts to share at mini church:
1. Reconfirm the heart of God in the three sermon points mentioned today. How is it that we can choose to select the God’s will?
2. If you have had the experience of being able to forgive someone through the help of the Holy Spirit, please share.
