McKinney Weekend Roundup: Sports Wins, Peaceful Protests, and Summer Fun Ahead

Listen Later

Saturday brought a wave of energy to McKinney as residents woke up to sunshine with temperatures quickly warming into the upper 80s by late morning, settling around 93 degrees in the afternoon. Humidity kept things feeling a bit sticky, though a gentle breeze from the south offered relief to anyone enjoying local parks or outdoor events. Allergy sufferers could breathe a cautious sigh—the pollen count was moderate, mostly from grasses and a hint of ragweed. Air quality remained good, making it a perfect day to be outside.

Local sports fans had plenty to cheer about. On Friday night, the McKinney High Lions baseball team closed out their summer league with a nail-biting 4-3 win over Allen, thanks to a walk-off single in the seventh inning. The Lady Bulldogs soccer squad also left the field victorious, besting Prosper 2-1 in an intense friendly. Over at the tennis courts, McKinney Boyd’s mixed doubles advanced to the regional summer finals, capping a weekend of spirited play.

Yesterday, McKinney joined over a dozen North Texas cities hosting the nationwide No Kings protests, part of a movement opposing President Trump’s recent actions. The event, held at McKinney’s downtown square, drew a peaceful crowd of roughly 400, with participants waving signs and rallying as part of a coordinated day of action. Police reported no incidents, and McKinney’s demonstration was among the best organized and most positive in the region, especially compared to Dallas, where one arrest was made earlier in the day.

On the civic side, the McKinney National Airport’s north runway extension project continued on schedule, with an impressive 500-foot addition expected to boost local flights and facilitate more commercial traffic in the coming months. Residents commuting near the airport may notice increased construction activity, but delays remain minimal.

Looking ahead, the Texas Music Revolution returns next Saturday, promising live performances from chart-toppers and local favorites in downtown McKinney. Advance tickets are selling fast for this beloved local festival.

As Sunday dawns, expect cooler lows overnight but another warm, sunny day ahead—the perfect backdrop for fathers and families celebrating Father’s Day or simply enjoying another beautiful North Texas weekend.
