Mech & Matter

In this conversation with "The Evening Woodworker" Jared Geddes, we discuss some builds on his Youtube Channel, his woodworking journey and tips, and his experience with mechanical engineering at Boeing.

In this conversation with Rice University's Vice President for Research and Professor of Materials Science and Nanoengineering Dr. Ramamoorthy Ramesh, we discuss how his research with multiferroics and transistors, his work in reducing the cost of solar with the SunShot Initiative, and post-PhD career pathways.

In this conversation with Georgia Tech's materials science professor and principal research engineer Dr. Jud Ready, we discuss how he got into aerospace engineering and materials science, his Materials Science and Engineering of Sports class, his work on NASA's Lunar Flashlight, and his research contributions to the renewable energy field.

In this conversation with Vanderbilt University's Dr. Piran Kidambi, we discuss his international engineering education, his chemical reaction engineering class, 1D & 2D materials, and the potential impact of his work with atomically-thin membranes.

In this conversation with the Northwestern University's mechanical engineering professor Dr. Jian Cao, we discuss her path with engineering and the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, using different manufacturing processes in different steps of production, and her work as the Director of the Northwestern Institute for Manufacturing Science and Innovation (NIMSI).

In this conversation with the University of California Los Angeles's research and development engineer Dr. Angelica Saenz-Trevizo, we discuss her journey with mechanical engineering and materials science, her outreach in Mexico with underprivileged students, and her work at the California NanoSystems Institute Nanofabrication Lab.

*Apologies for the imperfect audio and background noise, this conversation was recorded outdoors!*

In our discussion about etchers, Dr. Saenz-Trevizo meant to say electronic fields, instead of electromagnetic fields.

Instead of "neutrons", Dr. Saenz-Trevizo meant to say "neutrals".

In this conversation with the UCLA California NanoSystems Institute's Dr. Michael Lake, we discuss his education in physics, microbiology, virology, cybernetics, and chemistry, the different types of microscopy and how AFMs (atomic force microscopes) work, and upcoming scanning technology and possibilities for the fabrication of new materials.

In this conversation with the University of Michigan's materials science lecturer and lab instructor Dr. Tim Chambers, we discuss how he got into physics and materials science, cool labs and projects in his classes (MSE 360), the UMich Bladesmithing Club, and his outreach with aspiring materials scientists.

In this conversation with Stanford materials science Professor Leora Dresselhaus-Marais, we discuss how she got into science, her research and experience with dark-field x-ray microscopy, and her inspiration and development of the new "Metalheads" course at Stanford.

About Professor Dresselhaus-Marais: Leora Dresselhaus-Marais is an assistant materials science and engineering professor at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in the mechanical engineering department. She was a Lawrence fellow in the Lawrence Livermore National Labs Physics and Life Sciences Directorate. She got her PhD in physical chemistry at MIT, where she studied dark-field x-ray microscopy.

About the podcast: Mech & Matter is a podcast created by a student, for students. This podcast aims to connect the worlds of materials science and mechanical engineering and bring them to high school and college students. The goal of the podcast is to give students resources and insight into careers and the potential pathways of being a science major and to allow them to hear firsthand from industry professionals and professors about their work and research. The podcast will star professionals from all careers, backgrounds, and research interests.
