Cell signals are transmitted by biochemical molecules but also through mechanical forces, like tension, stretching or compression. Mechanical information is processed and integrated so that cells can make fundamental decisions such as growing, differentiating and moving. The key player in this process is the cytoskeleton, a dynamic matrix of filaments and motor proteins that helps the cell to maintain its shape and internal organization. How do the environment, the cell membrane and the cytoskeleton talk during tumor invasion? And which is the role of mechanical forces in this event?
