A big part of journalism -- as practiced properly, which is harder and harder to find these days -- is not activism and not sanctimony and not arrogance but restraint. We have to do our job, which is tough enough already, without yielding to the temptation to do everyone else's job. Not social worker. Not social engineer. And, not a political or moral leader. When we forget that, and lose our way, we hurt our profession in immeasurable ways. Focus people.
