On our Medical Matters, we’re talking all things “Rare Disease”. Rare Disease Day is a day to raise awareness of the over 7,000 rare diseases that impact over 300 million people globally! Over 72% of rare diseases are genetic in origin, collectively estimated to affect up to four million South Africans. Most of these conditions, also called “orphan diseases”, have their onset in childhood (often recognised at birth), continue for life, and are chronic and disabling.
