In this podcast, Gayatri Desmukh goes into the assertion that self-mastery can be attained with the help of regular meditation.  She opines that the problem with most is that people tend to use parameters set by others to evaluate themselves.  We must become accustomed to setting our own parameters and meditation assists us with this by helping us discover ourselves.  Even persons already into personal growth can be introduced to themselves through meditation.  It is by this process that the goal of self-mastery is achieved.
