The Athlete CAFE would like to give a warm welcome to our first guest, Tim Mack!
Tim Mack was an 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist in Pole Vault. He started vaulting at age 13 and didn’t retire until he was 37 yrs old. He went to Saint Ignatius High School and was not recruited out of high school but continued his passion at Malone College and University of Tennessee where he earned his bachelor's and master's degree. At age 31 he won an Olympic Gold with an Olympic Record 19’6 1/2” and 2 weeks later became one of only 20 vaulters in history to join the “6-meter club” clearing 6.01 meters. Through his career he designed much of his own workouts and training and is now currently coaching at Spire Institute of Academy in Geneva, OH.
In this episode, Tim talks about his journey with his pole vault career from high school, to college and transferring to University of Tennessee. He talks about the highs and the lows of competing at the Olympic trails 3 consecutive times before finally making it to the big stage in Athens 2004. He shares some great advice and how working on his mental performance was the biggest step he took in his career. Whether you are at the high school level, collegiate level or professional level; Tim Mack has a great story on the journey of what it takes to get a gold medal at the olympics.
