Laughs after Loss

Meet The Family

Listen Later

Robin and Emma Rosenthal are a mother-daughter duo who lost their husband and father, Mark, to a heart attack 15 years ago. What followed wasn't a quiet retreat into grief, but years of grief groups, family trips, and a deliberate practice of bringing their loved ones up in conversation, often through laughter. This is the show that came out of that.

In the debut episode, they bring in their third family member — son and brother Sam, fresh off his wedding — to tell their full story for the first time. They walk through how they honored Mark at the wedding without making the day heavy, introduce the "pearls and onions" check-in they'll use every episode, and finally tell the full Bridgette story (a live-in caretaker, a Peeping Tom situation, and a failed attempt to light a car on fire with vegetable oil).

The conversation lands on a simple thesis: grief is wider than death, and laughter is a legitimate part of getting through it. Whether you've lost a parent, a job, a friendship, or a version of yourself you used to be, you're in grief group with them now.
