KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • I had a pretty normal, angsty relationship with my dad for the first 20-something years, we had tough roads to haul through, but in the past 32 years we’ve had a breakthrough. He passed away recently, but we had 20 years where we were really honest and vulnerable which was hard for him because of his upbringing. We buried our stuff and had 20 good years.
  • As children were never really taught to have empathy for anybody let alone our parents. When I recognised that it was difficult for my dad to be honest, affectionate and vulnerable because of his upbringing but I also recognised changes in him in the last 5 years of looking after his mother – who was not a nice person – where he became her best friend, I think it gave him the OK to share and be vulnerable.
  • I’m very passionate about community. The biggest thing about community is that people should feel like they belong. For people to feel like they belong they have to be accepted from where they’re at, not from where you want or expect them to be. My goal is to always meet people where they’re at, try to find myself in that and work through that space to build relationships.
  • Now we don’t have barriers and boundaries that keep us from seeing people. I’ve facetimed with my dad from halfway round the world. It’s so simple and there are no excuses holding us back from the technical side of things. The question is do we want to do it for our own benefit and the benefit of others. Life is about choices, do you want to make the choice to go out there and build relationships?

BEST MOMENTS
‘We have to make a choice every day whether to be empathetic to people.’
‘There’s not just two sides to every story, there can be four, five, or six sides, we just don’t know what other people are going through.’
"We need to be slow to be offended, if you make the attempt to contact someone and there’s no reciprocation you can’t get offended by that. Take people for when they can and want to engage.’
‘Train your brain into thinking the best of people rather than the worst.’

ABOUT THE HOST
Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.
Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?
Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?
Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
