A newly detected underground chamber is going to be excavated at Karahan Tepe any day now. Göbekli Tepe is also now under excavation and already new structures are being uncovered. Yoganburc is another site in the region which has just begun excavation. In this podcast we'll look at the full story of what is going on in this area of southeast Turkey in 2026 and analyse what might be found under the ground at Karahan Tepe in relation to other sites we have investigated.

An exploration of Baalbek in Lebanon including the quarry that contains the 'Stone of the Pregnant Woman' estimated to weight 1000 tons. However, in 2014 a much larger monolith was discovered weighing in at 1650 tons that is now excavated. Hugh Newman looks at the folklore of giants who may have been involved in the construction of the main Baalbek Temple that is about 1000m away. Hugh also discusses the idea that it was deliberately left there to mark the birthplace of the temple. Hugh then explores the main Baalbek temple, including the famous trilithon with 3 stones weighing 800 tonnes each, and finds other stones of equal magnitude in other secret parts of the temple. He and Andrew Collins discuss how they could have moved such large stones uphill to the main temple in antiquity. Did the Romans really do this or was it a much earlier culture? The answer may surprise you.

Paul Devereux is an author, researcher, lecturer, broadcaster, artist and photographer based in England. He is a co-founder of the academic publication Time & Mind – the Journal of Archaeology, Consciousness and Culture, a research associate with the Royal College of Art (2007-2013), and a Research Fellow with the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) group at Princeton University.

His work primarily deals with archaeological themes, especially archaeoacoustics (the study of sound at archaeological sites), the anthropology of consciousness (ancient and pre-modern worldviews), ecopsychology, unusual geophysical phenomena, and consciousness studies, spanning the range from academic to popular. Some of these apparently disparate topics merge in a few of his writings. He has written or co-written 28 books since 1979, and was the editor of the legendary Ley Hunter Magazine for 20 years. Dr. Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, an Indonesian geologist and pioneering researcher at Gunung Padang, joins Megalithomania to discuss the challenges of dating ancient archaeological sites using techniques such as seismic imaging, geophysical surveys and LiDAR, particularly in a landscape profoundly shaped by tectonic activity. Andrew Collins and I first explored Gunung Padang with Danny back in 2015, witnessing firsthand the remarkable site that would later spark worldwide debate. In this interview we revisit that research, including the controversial publication—and subsequent retraction—of Danny’s paper on Gunung Padang. The paper was withdrawn not because of any evidence of data fabrication or misconduct, but because of the far-reaching conclusions it presented, making it one of the most contentious episodes in recent archaeological publishing. We also explore underwater sites that link with the ancient stories of Sundaland, the lost continent of Indonesia - and look at the remarkable Megaliths of Sumatra and Sulawesi that Danny has explored in depth.

The original 'Megalithomaniac' John Michell gave a fascinating account of the excavators, scientists, theorists and artists who have fallen under the spell of the stones for centuries and been infected by '"megalithomania". Based on his 1982 book of the same name. John gave the organisers permission and encouraged us to use the name 'Megalithomania' for the conference back in 2005 and every year we hold the 'John Michell Memorial Lecture' and dedicate the conference to him.

Prof. Temple provided evidence that magnifying lenses, telescopes, and optical surveying techniques existed from the time of Old Kingdom Egypt, with magnifying crystals known even in Predynastic times, circa 3300 BC, but unknown to modern archaeologists and historians. The science of optics and a sophisticated technology for the manufacture of lenses was widespread and fundamental in ancient times. It inspired awe in cultures who used it, so became encoded in their mythologies and religions. NOTE: Audio Only.

Prof. Temple is author of a dozen challenging and provocative books including The Sirius Mystery, The Sphinx Mystery, Netherworld, The Crystal Sun, and The Genius of China. He is visiting Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science at Tsinghua University in Beijing, and previously held a similar position at an American university. He has done archaeometric dating work and exploration of closed sites in Egypt and his research into historical accounts of the Sphinx is the first comprehensive survey ever undertaken.
