Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor and remember military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originating after the Civil War as “Decoration Day,” it began as a grassroots effort to commemorate fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. Over time, the holiday evolved to honor the dead from all American wars and was officially named Memorial Day in 1967. Today, it is marked by ceremonies, moments of silence, and national reflection—most notably the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m.—
